|
|
We had a little dust up at our game the other night.
A guy was contemplating an all in bet specifically against his nemesis of the evening. The nemesis flatly resfused and and wouldnt let anyone touch his chips for a count, citing his opponent had to make the bet before he had a right to anything other than an across the table visual assessment.
Is that right or can you request a chip count at any time?
Appreciate all the help!

| As far as I know...you can ask for another player's chip count any time. This assumes of course that you don't abuse this by asking all the time; then it become bad etiquette. If you watch the WPT or WSOP, it is not uncommon to see a player, facing an all-in raise, ask for the chip count of the all-in player. Then the player or dealer count out the chips or sometimes the all-in player gives a good estimate if that satisfies the asking player. I would say that the player asking for the chip count had every right to do so and should not have been denied. |

You can ask for the chip count of an opponent from the dealer (or the player if there is no dealer) in any hand you are both involved in to assess a given situation. At the same time, that opponent and/or any other player has the right to call a clock on you (normally 30 seconds). The interesting thing is that if the clock begins before the count of the chips begin, the clock still runs while the chip count commences.
Incidentally, the player in your game that refused this knowledge showed poor etiquette and to be honest seemed scared in which case I would have probably called with nearly any decent hand as soon as he said he didn't want to give out that information. |

| You can ask for a chip count before you make the bet. If you need to know how much to bet to scare him off you need a chip count. If he bets $10,000 and only has $12,000 left, you're probably not going to be able to scare him off his hand. |
