| I know that many think making reads is one of the most important parts of poker. However, I disagree with this. I believe that being unreadable is the most important part of playing. Play for a while so you almost get predictable, and then become unpredictable. Also patience and getting paid off are very important. You have to get paid off when you have the best and you have to fold when you feel you don't have the best. Never chase a hand when the odds are not in your favor. |

| It depends on the stakes, in most stakes that people play online, others aren't even trying to read you, so it's far less important. |

making reads is the biggest part of poker in my opinion... if you know what your opponent has, there is no way you can lose on a consistant basis... being unreadable is obviously also an important factor, but i think most knowledgeable people understand this and already know how to prevent giving off a tell... |

| I have to agree with KGB making reads are the most important things in poker. Not making dumb mistakes is a close second. |

Hi, new here, but not new to poker.
My opinion is that it's neither. They're both very important to have a well balanced game. If you have one of these skills and not the other, success is hard to find. If you have a greater degree of skill in one and less in the other, then you need to realize your shortcomings and work on them. Knowing yourself is key as a player. |

| I think there is no ONE skill that is most important. I think making reads, being unreadable, making the right folds/bets etc.. realizing opponents tendencies all go hand in hand. |

this is very true, all sorts of skills are needed in poker, and mastering different skills is necessary to win consistantly. you not only need to be able to read players, but you need to learn how to bet with good/bad hands, and you need to learn to lay down a good hand when you know you're beat |

In some cases, it may be even MORE important not just to be unreadable, and not just to read your opponent, but to read what your opponent(s) thinks YOU have. And even then, it might be more important to read what your opponent is going to do based upon what you think his read is of you--and then do the opposite.

There's at least one instance where being unreadable is absolutely a KEY skill in order to maximize your profitability -- probably the most important skill -- and that's when you hold the nuts.
I played a hand recently where the board came K-K-x, the turn came another K, and I held the case K.
In such a case, you need to basically forget that you have the nuts, and act exactly how you'd play the hand without the nuts. Would you fire off a quick pot-sized bet, or would you check-raise, or just smooth call? (Folding is not an option, obviously.) There's no "right" answer -- you have to behave in a way that your opponents would expect you to without the nuts. |

| If you are talking about NL ring games, dont forget Bankroll and courage. Can't be afraid to put your money in with nothin and you have to have the BR to back it up. I guess this is more for slightly higher NL games, but important none the less. |
