Quite often there will be a flop like KK7 or 10,10,7. If you have limped in with something like an A7 or 67s what are the odds that another player has a K (assume a table of 9 players)? I generally tend to bet out in this situation, usually 1/2 to 3/4 of the pot. Is this the correct move?

are you just arbitrarily betting out or is there a reason you're betting? just hoping someone doesn't have the cards isn't a great way to try and win some money, IMO.

I did that in a MTT last night at a local bar league. It's called "finding out where you are". 4 people were in pre-flop and everybody folded to me. I was in the big blind and fired at the pot and took it down. If I was reraised a substantial amount I would have folded.

My reason to bet as jack said is to either take the pot there or find out where I am. If I experience any playback I fold. If the odds are low that the remaining other two cards to the pair are in play this seems like a good strategy.

I'll usually bet about 2/3 of the pot post-flop if nobody raises before me, then fold if i get a big reraise. If someone calls I'll usually check-raise the turn if they bet anything less than the pot. If they call that or put in a big raise, i'm beat. It's quite an aggressive strategy, but sometimes pays dividends, I'd welcome any comments.

I'd need more information here.
How many people have limped in with you? - More people = higher probability.
What pair is on the board? - I'm more suspicious of KK on a board helping someone then I would be of 44.
Position on the board? - I'd consider trying to buy a pot from late position. I wouldn't dream of betting out something like this from early position.
Overall player quality? - I'm not touching this against tricky players unless I feel very certain I've got them beat here. Betting out will get you raised and you still will have no idea where you stand since they could easily be bluffing you. A table of passive players gives you a better clue of where you're at in the hand if they happen to call or re-raise. |
