I was playing .25/.50 Stud H/L the other day, and made 3 jacks on 5th street. Only one other guy was at the table, and he kept raising with an obvious low board. I capped on 5th and 6th having the high, in case he didn't have the low yet. I just called on 7th to save the rake, and he turned over the low, and criticized me for capping with 3 jacks. I had only 2 showing and it ended up he didn't have jacks bet. His reasoning was that he was on a freeroll, because I had no possible low with my board showing, and he had a straight and flush draw, with the low already made. In a tourney, I think that's the right play, but in a cash game, I don't understand why you're capping when you can't beat the board. Even with the draws, shouldn't he wait until he can beat my jacks showing before raising? It was just us 2 in the pot. Any problem with his play or my thought process?

No, your opponent was correct and you made the donk play. He is freerolling, guaranteed to win atleast half the pot. If he was to wait until he could beat your 3 jacks, then he would win less bets from you. If he starts capping as soon as he knows he has half the pot, the pot will be bigger when he makes his hand, and he will lose no money when he doesn't, since he will still get half the pot.

I understand what you're saying about driving up the rake when you can only win half the pot but look at it from his perspective. He knows he has half the pot won. Nothing can change that. He also has draws to a hand that likely beats yours. He wants to get as much money into the pot as he can as soon as he's guaranteed the low. If you are willing to cap it with him while having no shot at a low he'll gladly cap every street and risk paying a few extra cents in rake because everytime he makes his straight or flush he will more than make up for it.
