| Now, the winner of the WSOP is considered the world champion, but thats one awesome week of luck and skill. But i dont think you can say there is one player who "is the best in the world". Now, doyle brunson is one of the greatest to ever play the game, and everyone knows this, but what are everyones thoughts about "best player in the world". In my opinion, you can't say there is 1 GREATEST player in the world, but there are poker greats no dobut. PLease discuss |

I second that it would be hard to say this player or that player is the best in the world
you can look at their player stats over a year or a life time and see who is at the top of the list and say he/she is the most successful but will that make them the best in the world???? no I don’t think so the winner of the WSOP is with out a doubt the best of that tournament but I don’t think any player can be called THE BEST IN THE WORLD
that title should fall to generalize over a large number of players some names we know and some we may never hear of............ example of this unknown player.........
we have a elderly gentleman that all the locals call the ""KING OF THE FINAL TABLE"" Mr. Jackson has over 400 tournaments final table's in 408 tournaments played if he were in Vegas or on TV would he be the best in the world that is one hell of a record.... and that is just in the time i have known him he is one hell of a great player |

| I believe that there is such a thing as the best player in the world. I also believe that it is almost impossible to clearly determine the best player in the world. |

Maybe you can't, but I can. It's me, of course. |

| After about another 40 years or more that may become more apparent. Poker is still too young to find "the best". Even if we thought we found the best, that player may have never played the Mosses or Ungars of years past. You can compare final tables and wins, but they are just short samples of a players ability. Even if they do win many games. Maybe after we all die they will be in heaven playing the endless game on some cloud and the answer will come to light. |

| I think us peons and such find it hard to relate to the utter level of play that the highest cash games and tournaments are. If you are not one of these peons, then you obviously have more of a handle on this topic and please reply. That being said, the only real way to know if there is a 'best player in the world', is to ask the people who are considered the top of the game, the top pros and so forth. And what seems to be the prevalent player noted in 'THE best player in the world' right now, is Phil Ivey. |

| i don't think there's any way to pinpoint the best player in the world. there are too many variations and aspects of the game. you might be able to categorize certain players as the best in things like types of games (holdem, 7 stud, omaha, 2-7, etc.) and types of play (ring games, tournaments, heads-up), but certainly the wsop champ is not the default best player in the world. the day that robert varkonyi was ever considered the best player in the world is the day i stop playing poker. i'm sure we all have our favorite players for different reasons, for me if i had to choose one player, and i guess really only applies to holdem, it'd be layne flack, the skills this guy has are amazing, and when he's on i don't think anyone in the world can beat him, his reads are just so amazing and there's just no way to ever put him on a hand. had it not been for some joke of a call at this years wsop, he'd have 6th bracelet. |

| I don't think that winning one tournament makes you the best in the world, no matter how large the tourney. To say that Moneymaker was the best is a slap to great players like Greenstein, Giang, Harrington and Ivey. It takes years of steady results to make that claim. And to compare tournament play to ring game play is equally ludicrous. It would be like comparing a running back to a defensive tackle. |

| Yes, we do know who is the greatest poker player in the world! Phil Hellmuth said it himself: if it wasn't for luck he'd win 'em all! |
