The answer to your question: All of the above. It is standard and this guy is an idiot. I just finished a session where I got my butt kicked by a few players like that one. Here's how it is. To you, preflop is part of the hand. You are dealt cards you will play, or not, according to the EV, your position and the action in front of you. To others, preflop is just the price to play the hand. They will enter the flop with almost any two cards no matter how many times it's been raised. I am sure that your "5-6 offsuit" opponent went for the straight, not knowing he will get it maybe 3% of the time. He flopped a pair, i.e. he's there till showdown. He even had the nerves to raise you with bottom pair with no kicker (slight pause to laugh and wipe the tears off my eyes). And finally, the river where the best preflop hand usually drawns. The river is also usually the place where that Ace hits, giving you 3 opponents pair of aces. The highest rag wins to your KK. |

Uh, opening 65o on the button HU is insanely standard vs almost all opponents. The only bad play in this hand as far as I can see is the turn raise. |

re. "standard" for the button to be opening with any connected (even low cards) due to position the rest of the hand: 100% agreed.
re. "only bad plat", well, hmmm... ignoring "metagame" and "image" (since this is at the higher blind levels, i.e. EndGame)...
Umm... one possibly, likely it's a "raise for a 'free' showdown". why? Well, some folks hope to hit the 5-outer to improve to a winner and get to value-bet it, but also want to prevent Ace-high from firing again on the river (which they "have to call" due to the size of the pot, even though 70%+ of the time they are losing the pot with their painfully-low 1pair hand).
Also some folks will raise the turn knowing it appears much stronger than on the flop (i.e. it's Bad Math to raise/chkraise the TURN with only a draw, thus it's usually 2pair or better). Perhaps the OP has shown tight-weak tendencies, and thus might fold a pair lower than a Queen at that point.
Or, heck, it's huge blind levels, so maybe villain thought OP would fold "to conserve chips, when WA/WB".
Or villain was multi-tabling and got his hands mixed up, had a Queen on the other table, saw the Queen on this flop, and raised for value on the turn. (who else has done something like that after playing 4 hands per hour per table for 1 or 2 hours without a break... amirite?)
Or the villain's cat suddenly jumped on his keyboard or mouse and clicked "raise" for him. |
